Cape Town fun sporting events - Fit for a cause

There are some great outdoor events and activities taking place over the next couple of weeks in the fairest Cape. If you happen to be staying along the magnificent promenade in Mouille Point, you might want to know what the masses of people walking the stretch of it are actually up to!Blisters for bread - A walk with a wonderful charity twistWhen: 26 August - Green Point Cricket ClubThis event is usually held on the last Sunday in August - so this month would mean the 26th to be precise - and is one of the larger, more popular events taking place in aid of the Peninsula School Feeding Association to feed hungry children. The walk usually attracts more that 15000 walkers and the funds raised are in excess of R700 000. This event has been taking place for the past 43 years and will most likely attract an even bigger crowd this year.There are three stretches to this walk:Start Times:
  • All walkers will meet inside the Green Point Cricket Club in front of the stage, prior to start of each walk. Prizes will be handed out.
  • 15km: 08h00
  • 10km: 08h30
  • 5km: 09h00
                  Gun RunWhen: 14 October - Green point StadiumThis popular half marathon takes place on the 14 October, and you guessed it, its also a Promenade event! The first race was held in 1993 and again split into three distances, meaning theres something for everyone at any fitness level (21.10 and 5 km run). The start is outside the Cape Town stadium and goes past the lighthouse, through to the waterfront along the fan walk. The longer routes go up Kloof Nek into Camps Bay and back to the promenade.        Depending on the length of race, entrance costs between R20 and R80. As with most fun events, the Gun run is raising funds for the JAG foundation. This is a foundation building upliften in communities through Sport with a key objective of the programme being to to train up coaches from the communities so that they can impart their skills to others and thereby increase training capacity in communities. The programme aims to motivate and train children ranging from primary through to high school to participate in running events such as cross country running, fun runs and track events. Initially spearheaded by acclaimed coach, the late Dave Spence, the programme has been activated in 29 different communities in the Western Cape, Free State, Gauteng and Kwazulu-Natal.Cape Town International Kite FestivalWhen: 03 November 2012 and 4 November 2012 - MuizenbergThis outdoor festival takes place in Muizenberg and is an annual annual fund raiser event for Cape Mental Health. Its Africas biggest Kite festival, attracting over 20 000 visitor for a great afternoon of fun in the sun. The sky fills up with magnificent brightly couloured kites and this years theme is All about ability. This will be the 18th Cape Town International Kite Festival and will ahppen on the weekend of the 3rd and 4th of November. There will also be food stalls, fun rides and a craft market. Starts at am, ends at 6 pm and is a great option for a family outing.
