I’ve been a runner for about 5 years, slowly getting faster and becoming more competitive and loving every minute of it. I like to consider myself an athlete. But as they say, too much of a good thing isn’t always the best for you. And better everything in moderation. So after suffering from an ITB injury for a while, I decided to take a break from running, and take up Yoga.
Even though I’ve done it before, going to a Yoga Studio intimidated me a lot. I’m not flexible at all. So the thought of being forced into tree, eagle, and horse poses, in a room with beautiful skinny models wasn’t something I was in a hurry to experience.
The first class was tough. As is anything you do for the first time. But intimidating? Not at all. The instructors at The Yoga Life are so friendly and helpful, they make you feel completely at ease.
I’ve really gotten into Bikram style yoga (that’s the one in a hot room). And with yoga you’ll learn that practise will never make perfect. But it will make you better. And only you know your capabilities. So the class is really what you make of it. Some days, I’ll walk out of the hot room, sweaty, relaxed and energised. And other times I’ll leave frustrated and exhausted.
But each session is a reflection on how I’m feeling, or how hectic my day has been.
It’s not just a physical work out, but a mental and emotional one too.
I’ve noticed a definite change in my body, in my sleep patterns, in my posture and my stress levels. And I’m running again.
So don’t worry about the skinny models (they’re not as good as you would think), and don’t worry you’re not good enough, because you’re only as good as you allow yourself to be. And you’re the only one judging in any case.
