Every year around spring the Cape Coastline burst into colour as the flowers go into bloom. Locals from far and wide make a point of heading up the west coast to bask in the sunshine, breathe in the fresh air and take in the beauty of the flowers. This year is said to be the most spectacular in years. I was listening to the radio on my way home from work the other night and there were so many reports on the beautiful flowers, I think I might actually take a drive and see for myself.
What you should definitely add to your list of things to see and do when in the Cape' is visit the West Coast National Park. And if you are fortunate enough to be staying with us in September, you might want to make a day of it and take a drive there for South African National Parks Week. Charlotte Seddon who was recently at the park said it was absolutely beautiful just blankets and blankets of flowers... lumo pinks and oranges and white flowers everywhere!
The West Coast National park is part of
SANParks - Africa's Premier Wildlife Tourism Destinations. When driving up the West Coast, they recommend the following:
- Bird watching in Geelbek, Seeburg and Abrahamskraal bird hide.
- Mountain bike & Cycling Route Trail.
- Strandveld hiking trails starting from Geelbek Visitors Centre.
- Picnic sites in Kraalbaai & Tsaarsbank.
- Whale watching - August to November in Tsaarsbak.
- Flower & Game viewing from own vehicle - August and September in Postberg.
- Kite boarding, Kayaking and other water sports can be done in Kraalbaai.
I have personally done a mountain bike cycle up along the west coast and can vouch that a Zebra Spotting or two is in store for you! (Will spare you the photo of me posing like a grinning fool on my bike next to a Zebra!)
